My working life, 40 years, was with Midland/HSBC Bank. During much of that time I worked with Small Business Customers, helping them to progress and grow. My final 5 years, was spent running a team of relationship managers, who each had their own customers. I also became skilled at interpreting accounting information, to help monitor and advise those businesses.
After retiring some 5 years ago, I decided to volunteer and became a Trustee for the Colchester League of Hospital and Community Friends, responsible for analysing the finances and reporting back to the board. I have thoroughly enjoyed this role, which involves monitoring the running of our shops based in Colchester Hospital and then using any profits we make, to put back into much needed equipment the NHS does not provide. I get great pleasure from seeing new equipment, we have helped provide, being used to benefit the patients and staff.
In 2018, I was approached to see if I was interested in joining the Trustees for Mid & North Essex Mind, to take on the role of Treasurer which was vacant. Having met the Trustees and many of the employees, who are dedicated to providing services to help improve mental health care, I was pleased to take on this role. I hope my skills will help to keep the charity on a sound financial footing.
