Blog: volunteering has improved my understanding of local mental health services

posted in: Uncategorized | 0

Hello, I’m Amy* and I’ve  have been working as a volunteer receptionist for Mid and North East Essex Mind for several months.  My role includes answering the phone, welcoming visitors at reception, booking rooms for counsellors and general minor administrative tasks.

I wanted to contribute to a local charity delivering services to the community and having always been interested in mental health issues, with a family member recently experiencing a period of severe mental illness, volunteering my services to Mid and North East Essex Mind was the obvious choice.

Having previously volunteered for a social enterprise I appreciate the benefits volunteering can bring in enhancing skills and gaining confidence to learn new ones.

Working within the reception office has improved my understanding of the various services that exist to support those experiencing mental health issues and this knowledge also supports me in my working role within the NHS. The fantastic team here at Mid and North East Essex Mind have been extremely welcoming and supportive and I have enjoyed meeting them all and developing my understanding of their roles within the organisation.

If you are considering volunteering I can definitely recommend it.  You will certainly meet some great new people and enhance your skills while helping the community

Amy 🙂
