On Sunday 10th October 32 brave fundraisers took part in Mid and North East Essex Mind’s inaugural Firewalk, walking barefoot over red hot embers to celebrate World Mental Health Day 2021. The event, held at Colchester United Stadium raised over £7,000 to support local mental health services.

Participant Julie Arthur said “I didn’t believe that I could actually do it until I did, what a fantastic feeling to achieve something amazing, especially getting sponsorship to support Mid and North East Essex Mind on World Mental Health Day.  I would encourage everyone to take a moment to think about their mental health and the mental health of others, anything is possible even walking on fire.”

Stephanie Mills, Marketing and Fundraising Manager for Mid and North East Essex Mind, said “We are thrilled with the success of our first Firewalk. Our sincere thanks goes to everyone who took on this challenge and to everyone who sponsored them. We were delighted to see so many people come along and support our brave participants. Thanks also goes to our event sponsor, DNA Architecture.”

World Mental Health Day is an international initiative where mental health charities and support providers come together to raise awareness of the services available and work to reduce the stigma and discrimination often experienced by those living with a mental health problem. This year we encouraged everyone to do #OneThing and start a conversation about mental health.
