What is counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy where a qualified counsellor works with you to help you improve your wellbeing. Wellbeing is about being comfortable, happy and healthy.

If there are things in your life making your unhappy or uncomfortable, counselling may be able to help.


What’s involved?

Counselling time is your time. Each session is time for you to explore your feelings and concerns in a safe, private space with a counsellor who has knowledge and skills to support you. You can explore difficult feelings and know that your counsellor will be supportive, respectful and non-judgemental.


How can counselling help?

There are many reasons why people choose to have counselling. Some things counselling can help with include:

  • coping with bereavement or a relationship breakdown
  • coping with redundancy or work-related stress
  • exploring issues such as sexual identity
  • dealing with issues that are preventing you from achieving your ambitions
  • dealing with feelings of depression, sadness or loneliness
  • helping you worry less
  • helping you develop a more positive outlook on life
  • helping you understand yourself and others better
  • helping you feel more confident


About the service

All of our counsellors are accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or working towards this accreditation. This means they work to a level of quality that is expected by the BACP. We will make sure we connect you with a counsellor that’s most suitable for you, and we have both male and female qualified counsellors.

Each sessions lasts 50 minutes and you can choose and time and day that suits you, and we always aim to be as flexible as possible by offering. You can have as many counselling sessions as you find helps you, normally we suggest 6 sessions to start with and then more if you’d like them. You can choose between virtual, face-to-face or telephone counselling to suit you.


What does it cost?

Some people choose to pay for counselling as it can give them a bit more freedom.

For fee-paying counselling at Mid and North East Essex Mind, prices start at £40 per session for an individual and £60 per couples’ counselling session.

Fees for psychosexual counselling vary, please contact us for more details.

Fees are paid a week in advance.
