What can I leave to charity in my Will?

There are three different types of gift that can be left to charity as part of your Will:

  • Residuary – a share in, or all of, what’s left of the value of your estate after family and friends have been taken care of:
  • Pecuniary – a specific sum of money
  • Specific – an item such as jewellery or a piece of art

What if I change my mind?

You are always free to change your mind about your gift. You can amend your Will, or add a codicil, at any time.

What’s next?

Make a Will Online

You can go to www.makeawillonline.co.uk/mnessexmind and make a will.  The cost is £60 for one will or £90 for a pair of wills.  We’ll learn about the existence of the will and the gifts – which makes a huge difference to us.  Each time a will is made we also receive a £20 donation.

By using the link above we find out about the existence of your will, gifts and if you consent – your name.  You can make a will yourself without sharing any of this info by using this link to make a will online.  Whichever way you proceed we are enormously grateful.

Make a Will through a Solicitor

If you have a high value estate or if you have complex requirements or if you would simply rather speak to someone face to face you can find a solicitor through the Law Society.

Make sure any solicitor uses our full name: Mid and North Essex Mind, our charity number 1064309, and our registered address: The Constantine Centre 272a Mersea Road Colchester CO2 8QZ.

I already have a Will. Is it difficult to change it?

Many people decide to change or alter their Wills. If the changes are simple and straightforward this can be done by way of a Codicil – a legally binding document, supplementary to a Will, which is executed with the same formalities as a Will, and adds to, varies or revokes provisions in the Will.

If the changes are major it is likely you will need a new Will. As the addition of a Codicil will affect the contents of your Will we always recommend that you seek professional legal advice.

Alternatively, you can include your wish to leave a gift to charity within a Letter of Wishes.
