You Got This!*

*And for when you haven’t, we’ve got you.

Why movement matters

According to national Mind, moving more is good for our physical and mental health. It can help with things like:

  • Managing stress
  • Improving sleep
  • Boosting your mood
  • Increasing your confidence
  • Managing symptoms of depression and anxiety
  • Memory and brain functioning
  • Heart, muscle and bone health
  • Reducing the risk of developing some long-term conditions

The Mental Health Foundation reports that 56% of adults said exercising regularly helped them to manage stress. They also show in their ‘Movement and Mental Health Report’ that regular physical activity can reduce your risk of depression by up to 30%.

And the NHS says there are many benefits of exercising, including:

  • Getting out and about in nature and green spaces
  • Building a sense of community
  • Helping you to build a routine

What are the barriers to moving more?

We know that there are times when we struggle with being active. Living with a mental health condition that affects your motivation, or experiencing chronic pain, may be an issue. Some people also may over-exercise or struggle with mental health conditions such as an eating disorder or body dysmorphic disorder.

If you are living with a condition, you may want to speak to your GP or a health professional before you get started, to make sure you begin exercising in a safe way.
