About this training
Would you recognise the signs that someone may be in crisis? Would you feel confident responding if a conversation turned to suicidal thoughts?
This funded Suicide Awareness Training session in Chelmsford is designed to help you feel more prepared to have potentially life-saving conversations with someone who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts or emotional distress.
The workshop provides practical tools to help you stay calm, respond with confidence, and understand what to say — and what not to say — when someone may be at risk.
You’ll explore how to recognise possible warning signs, use supportive and appropriate language, and hold a calm, boundaried conversation while connecting the person to the right kind of help. This training does not ask you to take on the role of a therapist or clinician, but helps you understand how to respond safely and compassionately.
What you’ll learn
During this workshop, participants will:
- Discuss warning signs to look out for, including when someone may not be engaged with mental health services or may not have spoken directly about suicide
- Learn appropriate language to use when talking about suicide
- Explore how to have supportive, boundaried conversations with someone who may be at risk
- Understand where and how to signpost someone for further help
- Explore strategies for self-care during and after conversations about suicide
Who is this training for?
This session is suitable for anyone who wants to feel more confident supporting someone who may be in crisis, including employers, managers, colleagues, volunteers, community groups, frontline staff, and anyone supporting people in their personal or professional life.
Why this training matters
Suicide can affect people in every community and workplace.
In England, 5,717 suicides were registered in 2024, and around three in four were men. Locally, 168 people ended their lives by suicide across Greater Essex in 2023.
This training helps people feel more prepared to notice when someone may be struggling, start a supportive conversation, and signpost them towards the right help.
