Would your team recognise the signs that someone may be in crisis, and feel confident responding if a conversation turned to suicidal thoughts?

Whether you are booking for yourself, your team, or your wider organisation, this course helps build the confidence to notice when someone may be struggling and respond in a calm, compassionate and supportive way.

Suicide Awareness is designed for anyone who wants to feel more prepared to have potentially life-saving conversations. You may need this knowledge in your workplace, as a leader, colleague or team member, or in another part of your life where you want to support someone you care about. The course provides practical tools to help you stay calm, respond with confidence, and know what to say – or what not to say – when someone may be at risk. It explores warning signs and how to hold a supportive conversation and connect the person to the right kind of help, without taking on the role of a therapist or clinician.

Course aims and objectives

During this workshop, participants will:

  • Discuss warning signs to look out for, even when the person may not be engaged with mental health services or specifically have spoken about suicide
  • Learned appropriate language to use when talking about suicide
  • Explore strategies for self-care both during and after conversations about suicide

Suicide can affect people in every community, workplace and family. In England, 5,717 suicides were registered in 2024, and around three in four were men.

Locally, 168 people ended their lives by suicide across Greater Essex in 2023.

This training helps people feel more prepared to notice when someone may be struggling, start an empathic conversation, and signpost them towards the right help — whether that support is needed at work, at home, or in the wider community.
